Refuge Recovery is more than just an addiction program—it is a practice, a process, a set of tools, a treatment, and a comprehensive path to healing addiction and alleviating the suffering that addiction causes. The foundation and guiding principles of Refuge Recovery are drawn from the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, known as The Buddha, who lived in India about twenty-five hundred years ago. Through his personal efforts and dedicated practices, he gained profound insight into why humans experience and perpetuate suffering and identified the root cause of suffering as an “uncontrollable thirst or repetitive craving.” The Buddha discovered and lived a way of life that brought an end to all forms of suffering. His approach involved meditation, wise actions, and compassion. After liberating himself from suffering caused by craving, he dedicated his life to teaching others how to achieve well-being and freedom—a life free from suffering. The Refuge Recovery program has adapted these fundamental teachings of the Buddha as a modern treatment for addiction, offering a path toward healing and freedom from suffering.
